The South Australia town of Kapunda lies on the Light River and borders the Barossa Valley. It sprang up as a result of the discovery of copper in the area in 1842 by Charles Bagot and Francis Dutton. They proceeded to purchase 80 acres where the copper was discovered, and began mining in 1844. Some of the ore was exported to Swansea which encouraged some of the Welsh miners to travel to South Australia and help in the mines in 1851. Just 9 years later the town benefitted from the railway line which ran from Adelaide to Morgan. The town also had a racecourse to entertain its mine workers, the photo below showing a meeting in 1909.
